Why move the blog

Word Press ButtonJ, one of the readers of my blog left a comment about being able to use blogger on this domain name and pointed out a couple of things that blogger doesn’t have. This got me thinking about why I switched away from Blogger. Blogger is great and everything, but there are just some things that it doesn’t do. If you have only used blogger to chronicle your life then in my opinion you are seriously missing out. Here’s some of the things you can do with WordPress that are not possible with Blogger.

Categories - You can put your posts in certain categories. It’s not really a big thing, but since I’m an organization freak I enjoy this feature.

Publishing - I can write up a post in advance and have it posted on another day. In other words I could write this post up tonight and not have it display until tomorrow.

Plugin’s - There are a bazzillion different plugins for WordPress. I have a couple of them installed on this blog already. The one’s I have installed are not viewable to the public, but I will be installing a few later on that will add some functionality to the site.

Templates - There are a bazillion templates out there that you can get for WordPress. And if you want you can have J build you a template!

Last but not least…you the viewers of this site no longer have to fill out the word verification that Blogger has for comments. I know that the word verification is needed for the Blogger sites, but lately I’ve been finding myself filling it out at least 2 times before my comment is posted on a site (I’ve double and triple checked my spelling on some of these and yet it still asks me to enter it again).

So if you are thinking about making the jump away from Blogger I highly recommend it. If you want some help doing that let me know.

As I stated earlier category archiving and comment administration is the only features I care about that Blogger does not offer. You will find your new blog filling up with SPAM before you know it if you do not turn on some kind of word verification I don’t care how good your SPAM filters are. You can set Blogger to build PHP or ASP files which means you add server side code to your blog. Not as flexible as getting access to the code files like in WordPress, but people who like to change core files is not exactly Bloggers target audience if you know what I mean.

J, I’ve got SpamKarma installed on this blog and my StrengthNews.net blog and it has done a great job on both (it’s learning on this one!), so I won’t be needing to do much with spam. Just collect it and delete it!

Nice digs!!! But I’m sticking with Blogger. I don’t blame you for moving, however.

I’m still told when I comment that I’m a spammer. If you don’t want to talk, just say so man.

    Brent,

You’d love wordpress…I know you would. Being the geek that you are. :)

Patrick, I just found out that there’s a bug in the spam comment software I’m using. I should have fixed it. I do want to talk man…I do!
