Going to San Francisco

Union Square, San FranciscoTwo weeks ago now the wife and I broke the bank and purchased our tickets and lodging to San Francisco in June/July. We’re going for one of my cousin’s weddings and I’m sure we will see all of the family that we have not seen in a few years…well actually it will be close to 6 years. WOW…that’s hard to believe.

Neither one of us have been to San Francisco before so I’m sure it will be an interesting experience. We are going to staying near Union Square at the Executive Hotel Vintage Court. From the website I kind of get the idea that it is a homely little place (Wife inserts: it looks fancy and it’s better than the Holiday Inn!). We have 2 things that are planned, besides the wedding. One of them is a tour of the city and the other, if the weather cooperates, we will be watching the million dollar fireworks show from the water.

Last week the wife went and picked up a little travel guide that I’m sure will make us look like real tourists, but it has some good information and a map for us to argue over! There were a couple of nightlife places that I wouldn’t mind checking out. First one being the Boom Boom Room. Get your minds out of the gutter. It’s a blues bar…or at least that’s the way it’s advertised. In addition I want to get out to Alcatraz and take the tour. Oh and I suppose I’ll hit the Golden Gate Bridge as well and see if I can take some pictures. Speaking of pictures my old man is taking pictures of the wedding so I’m sure I’ll probably get wrangled into helping out in some way!

If any of you have been to San Francisco let me know of what places to visit and what not to visit!

That’s pretty cool. I’ve never been to California so I can’t be much help. We might be headed to Iowa for a wedding in September so maybe we can catch up and have a few beers then?

Hell yeah we’ll have a few beers or drinks or something! Headed to the same place around Des Moines?

My mom was born in San Francisco, but left there at the age of 2. I tried to get some good locations from her to share with you, but she just dummied up and said she didn’t remember much. Yeah, sure!

OH, and I know a SF Detective, in case you get in trouble. His name is Jim Ramsey. Super nice guy, feel free to drop my name!!

Brent, I’ll be keeping that name handy. It’s a wedding party so we’ll see how things go. Not sure if I’ll be doing the bachelor party on Thursday night, day we arrive, but it is tempting!

SF is one of my favorites places. I’ve only been once, but would LOVE to go back. You have to see the bridge, of course, and the wharf. Take time to see Alcatraz. That was my favorite, but I’m a little weird like that. For a couple of bucks extra, you can get an audio tour rather than following around the guide in the bad ranger outfit. Completely worth it. They have an amazing public transportation system. If you’re going to be there more than a day or two, it’s worth looking into. They sell passes everywhere - downtown it seems like there is a CVS pharmacy on every corner and they all have them. You can get a week long pass for like 15 bucks.

Jen, We are going public transportation for EVERYTHING. We will not be renting a car. I’ll be sure to check out Alcatraz! It’s the one place I want to see for sure.
