The water heater at the dumplex did that to us. If I remember correctly it's like a nine dollar check valve that fails and you can change it with simple hand tools. A pair of channel locks if I remember right. You might keep a watch on it because if it blows once, it blows again. It's worth the nine bucks to get rid of the headache and it should only take a few minutes to get changed out. If you go to Lowes or Home Depot someone there will be able to walk you through it.
