It’s a popularity contest

Paulina and DancerSo if anyone watched the Dancing With Stars elimination you’ll know that my pick of Billy Ray Cyrus being eliminated was totally wrong. The only explnation I have is that it’s a dang popularity contest.  Paulina P (I can’t pronounce her last name, much less spell it) was voted off.  Of all the people on the show I’d have to say that she’s the least well known.  Her dances were not outstanding by any means but they were better than the “stumbling bear” of Billy Ray Cyrus.

So based on the fact that it seems to be a popularity contest and not an actual dance competition I’m guessing that Billy Ray Cyrus might actually go far and Apollo Anton Ono might get booted early.  I doubt that many people know him. Additionally John Ratzenburger might go pretty far as well.  Oh and here would be the shocker.  Laila Ali…she won’t make it to the finals.  Yeah she’s the daughter of Ali, but who knows her?  And the winner will be Joey Fatone because all the teeny boppers that grew up listening to NSYNC are now in the mid to late 20’s and watching him do his thing.

I’m probably way off my rocker on some of these, but given the way things are going…it might actually happen like that.

The wife and I went dancing last night. We had a group class where we learned Salsa and the Merengue.  The Merengue is pretty damn easy.  Just go to the left and then back and then forward.  Okay it’s a bit more complicated than that, but that’s how it was explained to us.

After group we had our private lesson. We reviewed the Rhumba, which I’m pretty good at (it’s a square…I should be good at it!) and then moved onto the Cha Cha.  Pretty good, but it needs practice.  Then we learned 2 new steps.  One of them was a pause step for the Waltz which is pretty easy for the guy but a bit harder on the lady.  Then we learned a quarter turn on the swing…which the wife loved because I actually had to move.  Most of the “extra” moves up to this point has been about moving the lady around, but now I had to move.  I did okay, but it needs some practice!

I’m with you on the popularity contest. I think Ali’s Daughter could probably win because she’s pretty good. But I think you’re right on with Joey Fatone. Drew Lache won for the same reason so I guess they’ve figured out what makes people watch and it has nothing to do with talent. I really think that Jerry Rice had enough votes to win but the network knew the show would have zero credibility if he did. Emmit Smith was actually pretty good so he might have truly been the winner of his show, but in short I’m with you on this one.

My sister-in-law wants to start taking swing lessons and my brother-in-law won’t go so I might convince her to start taking them with me once they move home.

I haven’t seen the previous shows so I’m not sure about the other people, but this one so far is a popularity contest. It might change this week however. we’re recording tonight as we just got done learning the double swing…which I suck at!

Learning with your sister in law might not be a bad thing. I know where we dance they encourage us to dance with other people!

Crap! I know I left a comment on this topic a few days ago!! Anyway, I think I said something like…I don’t think it’s all about popularity. Look at the winner of the first season…Kelly Monaco…most people had no idea who she was (she’s on General Hospital), but she was the underdog (she sucked at first), so she got lots of votes. And last season Vivica Fox and Harry Hamlin, two people who are actually STARS, didn’t really make it that far. I don’t know, I think it has a lot to do with the personality they show on the show, not how popular of a star they are. It seems like if they show a lot of personality in their preparation videos each week; if they come off as funny, humble, etc…then they usually stick around a while. Emmitt Smith and Mario Lopez were the final two last season and they were AWESOME. Plus, Joey Lawrence was third and we he was great too.

Chas - I’ll check to see if the spam stuff is eating comments. Patrick said the same thing awhile back.

Well it might be possible that it’s not a popularity contest, but at the moment it looks that way! :) Shandi and Paulina right now. Not the most well known women on the show at this point. So next week will be intereting. Will it be Leesa (my wife wants her gone!)
