22 miles out!

Yesterday I received a batch of photos of my brother in law and one of his latest hunting trips from my mother in law. If I haven’t mentioned it before, my brother in law is a hunting guide in Montana and Idaho. He takes people back into the wilderness on horse back and guides them to a elk, deer or bear, but most of the time it’s elk. By wilderness I mean at least 22 miles away from a parking lot which is probably another 30-50 miles away from the nearest civilization. I suspect most people in Iowa (and other places) would have no idea what this is like because public land in this size is unheard of in the Midwest.

The e-mail I received yesterday said that for whatever reason my brother in law had to walk 22 miles out after this hunt. This isn’t the first time that he’s had to walk out. Previous times had to do with the fact that his horse ran away or something like that. However the walk out, if I remember correctly, was only about 3 or 5 miles. This is not an easy job, but there’s something about it that makes me wish I could do this. Below is a photo of how he looked after 15 miles of walking. Lucky for him snow hasn’t fallen yet.

Since I’m not sure how squeamish or people’s views on hunting are I’ll just post a link to one of the elk that they got on this trip (no blood!) The Elk!

Tomorrow I’ll have more to post…something rather large to post about (Monday!)!

Western Montana is beautiful. I suppose that beauty can be found just about anywhere however!

Chas - I told my wife that you thought he was hot. She said “In that picture?”. There are many other better pictures of him!

Great photos, Elk included. For several years my brother was a “ranch hand” at a hunting outfit in British Columbia (in the Canadian Rockies). He has lots of interesting stories too.
