Day 7: Sticker Shock!

This morning we took off from Lincoln Nebraska and made our way across the state. We ran into a rain storm for at least half of the drive which slowed us down somewhat, but not that much. We arrived safely and are in our apartment with the cats. The cats travelled as well as could be expected.  Frodo, the pickle boy, didn’t want to go and hid from us this morning.  Once he was on the Jeep however he stayed underneath the back seat until we made it here.  Tonks who was with my wife was about the same she said.  He didn’t completely hide out however.

Once we settled in we decided that we need to go and get some groceries.  So we got directions from someone at the front desk and made out way to the nearest Safeway (as we know it).  We started in the fruit and vegetable section and the prices weren’t that bad.  However as soon as we made it into the meat section sticker shock set in and stayed.  In Iowa we could buy a package of boneless chicken breasts for about $6 (sometimes less sometimes more).  Here they wanted $12 for a 2.5lb bag of the same.  Yeah we just about had a heart attack with that. But we continued on with our shopping (can’t skip eating right?  Okay we could probably stop eating after all the crap we’ve eaten the last couple of days). Our total bill came to $150 (this is just the generics people) but since we signed up for Safeways card program we saved like $30 I believe.  For what we bought here it would have cost us about $80 at the most in Iowa.

We knew things were going to cost more when we moved out here, but this one kind of took us by surprise.  However we did find a Wal-Mart Superstore online so next time we will go there and see if it’s any cheaper (we really hope so).  However we are remaining positive.

Next up house hunting!

I know we don’t compare as we’re feeding 6 people, a dog, a cat and a fish but….our regular, WEEKLY, grocery bill is $300. I find meat (especially chicken) to be incredibly expensive…we were incredibly spoiled when my dad worked for Freybe Meats, I would a bit of paperwork for him and we’d get incredibly fresh, yummy meats…except for chicken….but hey, when you can have steaks weekly….who’s going to complain.

Yeah 6 people doesn’t compare, but it’s still expensive out here. I talked to my parents last night and they confirmed the price difference (they live in Montana). So we may end up doing a lot of shopping at Sams Club and getting little things from other places. We will see. Now I need to find some coffee…
