Day 13: Estes Park
Yesterday morning the wind finally calmed down. By calmed down I mean that it went from 50 mph gusts to a constant 10-20 mph wind. This is Wyoming I guess!
So after a breakfast in Mildreds (the motel diner) we headed south into Colorado. We are only 7 miles from the Colorado border. Not to long after we were on the interstate we were able to see the snow covered mountains in Colorado. My wife was estatic and said that there were no problems living here now (although she’s a bit lonely I can tell). 50 miles up the interstate we turned off and went through Loveland Colorado. Loveland looks like a very nice place, but also a very expensive one as well. After were were through Loveland we began the climb up to Estes Park. The climb followed a creek, Big Thompson, all the way up to the top and we went in and out of a canyon. All along the road there were fisherman pulled off on the side of the road trying to catch a fish or two (catch and release only).
Both of us were a bit surprised when we went into Estes Park. We were expecting a small town that was kind of quaint. There is a section of town like that that we walked through, but overall it’s bigger than what we expected it to be. We stopped at the visitors center and walked towards the golf course where I was told the elk hang out. However they were no where to be seen. I overheard one of the workers in the visitors center say that they were around, but you had to look for them. We didn’t look.
We went into the quaint part of the town and walked around. Estes Park and perhaps the west in general is very friendly towards big dogs. In a matter of minutes I saw 3 of the biggest breeds of dogs that I never saw in the Quad Cities. I guess it probably has to do with the more open space. Any how we farted around this part of town and determined that we liked it. Both of us wanted to see some sort of wildlife but it wasn’t to be on this day. Prior to heading back to Wyoming (it’s not quite home yet, but will be once we have our house), we drove by this rather large white building that my wife had spotted earlier in the day. I remember a guy at work telling me that they had filmed The Shining up there, so we drove by and I snapped the picture above. It looks like everyone else wanted to see the hotel that The Shining was NOT filmed in (actually I did read that the remake of The Shining was filmed there)! Yes I did say that right. The Shining was not filmed here, but parts of Dumb and Dumber were.
This morning we woke up to a skiff of snow and we are out of coffee!
