The technical industry

Most of the time I really like working in the technical industry.  I really like solving problems for people and have them go “wow” when I’ve done nothing more than setup their e-mail.  However there are times, that I wish I wasn’t in the industry.  Take today, 1 minute before I was supposed to leave for lunch.

A call comes in.  This lady was having problems sending out invoices through e-mail.  She got an error message about a lost connection to the server.   I jump on our server, even though I know it’s already up, and check to make sure everything is working.  It is and I tell her that we’re all good on this end.  I tell her that the likely problem is that somewhere between her e-mail client and our server, there was a “blip” on the network and her connection timed out.  This isn’t good enough and I don’t know what else to tell her.  She just wants it to work, which I totally understand, but this one isn’t our fault and there are more variables involved that just the e-mail which I know does work.

So that’s how I left for lunch today.  I’ll go back, but if she calls me again, be looking for some headlines(j/k!)!

She probably feels like I would feel…you don’t know enough about what you’re talking about to really understand what’s going on…and you don’t completely trust the person you’re talking to b/c most people don’t seem to know what they’re talking about either.

Chas - I think your partially right. I get called because I’ve helped her before, but she’s one of these bossy ladies who think they know it all. She did get her problem fixed by herself however!
