You’re fired!

“Where’s my website at?” A voice asks.

As I turn around in my chair I pull out my iPod headphones.

“What was that?” I ask since AC/DC was blaring into my headphones.

“Where’s my website?” They ask again.

“Well,” I say turning to our big white board.  “It looks like your up next. We’ve had some issues that have slowed us down, so your up next.”

“You’re fired from doing my website.”

I sit there for a second thinking it’s a joke.

“I’ve found someone else to do it since you guys can’t get to it in time.”

“I’m sorry, but we’ve had other things come up that we’ve needed to do,” I tell them.
At this point the person “firing” me leaves and I look at my design partner.

“Apparently we’ve been fired,” I tell him.

“Honestly I’m glad they found someone else,” He tells me.

I have to agree.  This person has been nothing but a pain the ass.   To top it all off they wanted the site done on a rather thin budget and wanted to do some of it themselves.  I’ve been in this situation before and this one looked liked it was going to repeat. We’d put in WAY more work than what their budget was and then we’d end up spending hours training them on how to use software that they say doesn’t look to complicated.

I tell my boss what just happened and he’s cool with it.  He agrees that we’ve had other priorities, his priorities, and that it was fine. I honestly think if I’d been at my old job, that would have been a whole different situation.  I think we would have bent over backwards to not lose the business even if it would have cost us way more than it should have (honestly I think this still happens there; never did understand how they did so well charging so little.)

So I’ve been fired once in my life!!

Maybe you should have said “If you didn’t get the hint, we were trying to fire you as our customer.” You probably are better off because anyone that stays involved that much and wants to do stuff themselves to make it cheaper would be a huge pain in the ass. Sadly, the company I used to work for did that to our web guys that were hired. One day he flew off the handle and told them they were fired and they called to ask “how did it escalate to this? We’re sortof blindsided here.” They were, but my old boss was like that.
