And old dog learning new tricks…

Okay I’m not that old, but I kind of feel that way from time to time.  Earlier this year I mentioned that I had bought Guitar Hero and was going to do that.  I did it…not completely, but I got decent at it.

And now I’ve upgraded.  I’m getting guitar lessons.  It’s just through the city so it’s a group, but in the one week that I’ve attended I’ve learned more than I did from a $25 book.  I’m not anywhere near as good as I want to be, but over time…I’m going to get there.   My wife wants to also get guitar lesson’s but doesn’t want to take them with me. So perhaps once she gets her lesson’s we can hit the road as a 2 man guitar band!

Good luck with that. I play guitar well enough now that I can enjoy it, but if I had to do it all over again, I’m not sure that I would be able to go through all the trials and tribulations that got me to this point. I remember plenty of frustrating times over the years where I just couldn’t get my hands to do what I wanted them to, but sooner or later things start to fall into place and started to not seem so impossible anymore (granted, when I watch the “masters” play, that stuff still seems impossible to me, but I don’t think I’ll *ever* get to that level). But it’s definitely nice to hear a song on the radio that’s catchy and think “Hmm, I think I’ll go home and figure out how to play that…”

I started out going the lessons route too, but got pretty tired of that after a few months. It would have been nice if I’d have stuck with it, because I would like to be able to read notes, but I just got too tired of playing the crappy single-note songs that were in the Mel Bay book we were working through (probably a case of wanting to run before I could crawl).

They now have websites where two people (with broadband connections) can connect and play together over the internet, so if you ever get decent, let me know and we can jam.

The teacher of this class is a bit “odd” but I think by the end of this I’ll be able to go out on my own. I’m still trying to get my fingers to do what I want them to and make the notes sound decent, but 30 minutes of practice each day seems to have helped. granted I’m only playing single notes…haven’t even gotten into Chords and that’s probably where all hell is going to break lose for me.

If I stick with this for 6 months to a year I’ll be getting and electric and then I’ll take you up on that jam session…even though I’ll totally suck (but less than before!)!
